Caspian gull   Larus cachinnans

26/1/08

This 2nd year (1st winter) Caspian gull was seen on Richmond bank, Cheshire, UK on the 26/1/08. It was first picked up by T.V. and then seen by another 5 birders present. It was a very distinctive gull with dark rusty brown coverts contrasting nicely with the grey mantle, white head and long black wings. It was seen to take the aggresive albatross posture whilst defending a piece of  food. There is a photo of it long calling whilst on the water. It was fairly distant so photos not brilliant. This was the first caspian gull I have seen.

15/2/08

This Adult Caspian gull was seen on Birchwood pool, Moore NR, Cheshire,UK on 15/2/08. It was seen very briefly on the water, picked out by T.V. and I managed to get only a couple of photos as it flew away. It shows a dark marking on P5 on both webs, with more dark on outer web. A complete long white tip to p10 and a white mirror and white tip to P9 is typical of western type 'Ponticus'. The white moons eating into black on the mid primaries are shown well on this bird.

6/3/08

This second year (1st winter) Caspian gull was seen on Birchwood Pool on 6/3/08 . This gull has very worn plumage but still shows classic caspian gull features. It showed very well and I was able to get some very good images.

DSCN3279.jpg (50064 bytes) 13/3/08

This second year (1st winter) Caspian gull was seen on 13/3/08 on Arpley landfill but again was fairly distant. I was photographing an Iceland gull when this caspian gull came into view and was able to get images of the caspian gull and the iceland gull together. This bird was preening most of the time while I photographed it so its feathers are a little puffed up and gives it a short legged look in some of the images but when alert it was typical caspian gull.
